# Passkey Recovery

Passkey Recovery is an independent academic research project studying the security and usability of account recovery for passkey-protected accounts.

## What the project studies

Passkeys replace passwords with cryptographic credentials stored on, or synchronized across, a user’s devices. That model works well until the credential needed to access an account is no longer available. Platforms use different fallback methods, and each method introduces usability and security trade-offs.

The study compares recovery approaches when people use them in practice. Participants will create a temporary account, register a passkey, complete a simulated account-recovery task, and answer questions about the experience. The study should take about 10 minutes. Operational account and recovery data will be deleted after the session; only anonymized study data will be retained for analysis.

## Study status

The study is in its pre-launch phase. Joining the waitlist does not enrol someone in the research study and does not constitute research consent.
